Sunyoung Kim is a professional singer and teacher living in New York City. She made her New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall as a winner of Artists International Competition. She has appeared in numerous performances including the Aspen Chapel and the Marble Collegiate Church in New York. Ms. Kim has also participated in the master classes of Barbara Conrad, Jane Marsh, and Elly Ameling at the Art Song Institute under the direction of Brian Zeger. Additionally, she has participated in numerous summer festivals including the Aspen Music Festival where she performed and studied with W. Stephen Smith. Ms. Kim served on the adjunct faculty at the City College of New York where she enjoyed the challenge of motivating students at different levels as well as inspiring enthusiasm in them. Her teaching has been based on classical techniques that integrate different styles of singing, including musical theatre and contemporary commercial voice. In addition to college-level teaching, her experience as a music director and choral conductor has been an invaluable aid to students. Moreover, Ms. Kim has a special interest in vocal pedagogy and voice science; to that effect, she has been actively exploring interdisciplinary research, integrating vocal pedagogy with voice science in a speech science laboratory. Her research found that an alternative teaching method she proposed minimizes unnecessary tension during singing. She presented her research at the Voice Foundation Annual Symposium. This research is integrated into her teaching. As a result of her excellent teaching, one of her students, Jay Chang, was selected from MBC broadcasting company for the audition program, Under 19, and made a successful debut in South Korea.
